Review: Malkoff Hound Dog 18650

The Malkoff Devices family of flashlights has a new member, the Hound Dog 18650, which is designed specifically for use with a single 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable battery.  Rated to produce 800 lumens (900 momentarily) with its Cree XP-L emitter, the Hound Dog 18650 also provides a 30 lumen low mode using a High/Low bezel switch.  Two versions are available:

  • Cool White – 5700K Cree XP-L
  • Neutral White – 4000K Cree XP-L

The Hound Dog 18650 may be purchased as a standalone head for upgrading any existing Malkoff MD2 body or as part of a complete turn-key flashlight package – including the Hound Dog 18650 head, MD2 body and tailcap, KeepPower protected 3400mAh 18650 battery, and Intellicharger I2 charger.  Pricing ranges from $120 for the head up to $186 for the turn-key package.Continue reading

Best Flashlights of 2014

Now that 2014 is behind us the advent of the New Year provides an opportunity to reflect upon the year that was.  Over the past 12 months I’ve been fortunate to get my grubby paws on a lot of great products from some of the biggest names in the business, as well as a few that aren’t as well known.  This includes more than just flashlights, and in fact some of my favorite products have been the accessories and modifications that make my existing flashlights more useful.

Through it all there have been some products that stood out from the rest so I will start with a dozen noteworthy items that were reviewed here during 2014.  Some were brand new products, introduced during the past year, while others were simply new to me personally.

Review: Malkoff M91B LED Drop-In

The M91B is the newest addition to the Malkoff Devices line of LED drop-in modules. Like its predecessor, the M91A, the new M91B is designed for use with the Malkoff line of full-size flashlight bodies or as a direct drop-in replacement for the SureFire P90 incandescent lamp assembly used by the SureFire 9P, C3 Centurion, and Z3 CombatLight.

Suitable for handheld and weapon mounted applications, the new M91B is outfitted with a cool white Cree XP-L emitter rated to produce approximately 825 lumens at turn on and 700 lumens during continuous operation. When used in conjunction with a Malkoff flashlight body and high/low bezel ring a 30 to 40 lumen (approximately) low mode is also available. The M91B has a retail price of $89.00.

Review: Malkoff Hound Dog V3

The Malkoff Devices “Hound Dog” is a high-output compact flashlight known for its broad yet far-reaching beam.  Utilizing a Cree XM-L2 emitter and Don McLeish designed reflector, the Hound Dog is rated to produce as much as 1150 lumens of initial output (1000 lumens continuously for the Cool White version) along with a lower output mode for increased runtime.  Two emitter options are available:

  • Cool White – Cree XM-L2 (6200K U2 bin) rated at 1000 lumens sustained output
  • Neutral Tint – Cree XM-L2 (5000K T6 bin) rated at 900 lumens sustained output

The Hound Dog can be used with any of the Malkoff MD series bodies and tailcaps and is designed with an operating range of 5.5 to 12 volts, allowing for a variety of configurations and battery options.  Current pricing is $110 for the head only, $165 when equipped with the MD3 body, or $169 with the MD4.

Review: Malkoff Wildcat V5

Not content to rest on their past accomplishments, Malkoff Devices has released a newly revamped version of their popular Wildcat high-output flashlight head.  Utilizing the Cree MT-G2 emitter, a first for Malkoff Devices, the newest Wildcat is produced in two variations:

  • 5000K emitter:  Neutral tint, rated at 1600 lumens initially, 1400 lumens continuously
  • 3000K emitter:  Warm High CRI (Color Rendering Index), rated at 1000 lumens initially, 800 lumens continuously

The Wildcat head can be used with either the MD3 or MD4 Malkoff bodies and is designed to operate with lithium primary or lithium-ion rechargeable batteries.

Current pricing for the Wildcat is $169 for the head only, $224 when equipped with the MD3 body, or $228 with the MD4.  This review is based upon the 5000K version of the Wildcat. Continue reading

Over the years since its introduction, the Malkoff Devices MD2  has firmly established itself among the favorites of flashlight enthusiasts and those who demand the most from their illumination tools.  Designed to accept Malkoff drop-in LED modules, the MD2 can be purchased as a host (with no LED drop-in module) or as a complete “turn-key” flashlight with a M61 drop-in already installed.  The latest version of this drop-in, featuring a Cree XP-G2 emitter, is rated to produce more than 300 lumens of output for approximately 1.5 hours when used with lithium 123A primary batteries.
