Review: Malkoff Hound Dog 18650

The Malkoff Devices family of flashlights has a new member, the Hound Dog 18650, which is designed specifically for use with a single 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable battery.  Rated to produce 800 lumens (900 momentarily) with its Cree XP-L emitter, the Hound Dog 18650 also provides a 30 lumen low mode using a High/Low bezel switch.  Two versions are available:

  • Cool White – 5700K Cree XP-L
  • Neutral White – 4000K Cree XP-L

The Hound Dog 18650 may be purchased as a standalone head for upgrading any existing Malkoff MD2 body or as part of a complete turn-key flashlight package – including the Hound Dog 18650 head, MD2 body and tailcap, KeepPower protected 3400mAh 18650 battery, and Intellicharger I2 charger.  Pricing ranges from $120 for the head up to $186 for the turn-key package.Continue reading

Review: FoxFury Rook CheckMate

The FoxFury Rook CheckMate is a compact tactically styled flashlight powered by a pair of lithium primary 123A batteries or a single 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable cell.  Rated to produce 600 lumens at its highest setting, the CheckMate also provides a tactical strobe and lower output 90 lumen mode.

The CheckMate is the most powerful member of the Rook series of flashlights which also includes the 220 lumen Rook MD1 as well as several special purpose lights providing UV and multi-spectrum capability.  The CheckMate used in this review was provided by FoxFury and has a Manufactuer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $233.99.

Review: SureFire UDR Dominator

After years of anticipation the SureFire UDR Dominator has become a reality.  The largest and most powerful LED equipped flashlight produced by SureFire, the new UDR Dominator is an ultra-powerful portable spotlight designed for demanding activities such as search & rescue, border patrol, military operations, and maritime applications.  Utilizing the Luminus CBT-90 LED assembly, the UDR Dominator is capable of producing a focused 200,000+ candela beam.

Review: Olight S10-L2 Baton

The Olight S10-L2 Baton is a powerful yet very compact Everyday Carry sized light with a magnetic base for hands-free use.  Powered by a single 123A lithium primary battery or RCR123 (16340) lithium-ion rechargeable cell, the S10-L2 is rated to provide up to 400 lumens of output with its Cree XM-L2 emitter.

Review: SureFire P1R Peacekeeper

The SureFire P1R Peacekeeper is a compact high-output flashlight designed to meet the needs of law enforcement personnel. Normally powered by the included lithium-ion battery the Peacekeeper is rated to provide a maximum of 600 lumens of output and is available in two versions.

  • P1R Peacekeeper Tactical (P1R-A-BK):  Single output version (600 lumens) equipped with a press for momentary, twist for constant-on tactical switch.
  • P1R Peacekeeper (P1R-B-BK):  Dual output version (600 lumens and 15 lumens) with a click-type switch.  Partially press for momentary-on high output or press further, until it clicks, for constant-on high output.  Low mode is activated by returning to off and pressing or clicking again within 2 seconds.  After being off for more than 2 seconds, the Peacekeeper will always return to high mode the next time it is turned on.

Both versions of the Peacekeeper have a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $250 and retail for around $200.

Review: Malkoff M91B LED Drop-In

The M91B is the newest addition to the Malkoff Devices line of LED drop-in modules. Like its predecessor, the M91A, the new M91B is designed for use with the Malkoff line of full-size flashlight bodies or as a direct drop-in replacement for the SureFire P90 incandescent lamp assembly used by the SureFire 9P, C3 Centurion, and Z3 CombatLight.

Suitable for handheld and weapon mounted applications, the new M91B is outfitted with a cool white Cree XP-L emitter rated to produce approximately 825 lumens at turn on and 700 lumens during continuous operation. When used in conjunction with a Malkoff flashlight body and high/low bezel ring a 30 to 40 lumen (approximately) low mode is also available. The M91B has a retail price of $89.00.

Anytech XM-L2 P60 Drop-in

Anytech Tactical is based near Brisbane, Australia where they develop, modify, and distribute tactical lighting and equipment.  In addition to a full selection of tactical flashlights and hosts, they also carry their own line of LED drop-in modules for use with SureFire, Solarforce, and other lights that use the common P60 drop-in format.

Based on the Cree XM-L2 emitter, the drop-ins are rated to produce 800 lumens of output when powered by a single 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable battery.  Several different configurations are available with anywhere from 1 to 4 different operating modes allowing various combinations of High, Medium, Low and Strobe outputs.

A sample drop-in module configured for High/Medium/Strobe operation was provided by Anytech for review.

SureFire M6LT-B Guardian

Review: SureFire M6LT-B Guardian

The M6LT-B Guardian is the largest and most powerful handheld LED flashlight available today from SureFire. Touted as a “searchlight that fits in a coat pocket,” this latest version of the M6LT is rated to produce a 1200 lumen blast of light, 33% more than its predecessor, the 900 lumen M6LT-A.

Featuring a distinctive body design to accommodate its six 123A lithium primary batteries, the M6LT-B also incorporates an oversized 2.5” Total Internal Reflection (TIR) lens to produce a long-reaching beam.
