Review: Malkoff Hound Dog 18650

The Malkoff Devices family of flashlights has a new member, the Hound Dog 18650, which is designed specifically for use with a single 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable battery.  Rated to produce 800 lumens (900 momentarily) with its Cree XP-L emitter, the Hound Dog 18650 also provides a 30 lumen low mode using a High/Low bezel switch.  Two versions are available:

  • Cool White – 5700K Cree XP-L
  • Neutral White – 4000K Cree XP-L

The Hound Dog 18650 may be purchased as a standalone head for upgrading any existing Malkoff MD2 body or as part of a complete turn-key flashlight package – including the Hound Dog 18650 head, MD2 body and tailcap, KeepPower protected 3400mAh 18650 battery, and Intellicharger I2 charger.  Pricing ranges from $120 for the head up to $186 for the turn-key package.Continue reading

Review: SureFire UDR Dominator

After years of anticipation the SureFire UDR Dominator has become a reality.  The largest and most powerful LED equipped flashlight produced by SureFire, the new UDR Dominator is an ultra-powerful portable spotlight designed for demanding activities such as search & rescue, border patrol, military operations, and maritime applications.  Utilizing the Luminus CBT-90 LED assembly, the UDR Dominator is capable of producing a focused 200,000+ candela beam.

Users may select between 9 output levels (14 lumens to the full-throttle 2400 lumens) and a strobe mode by use of a head mounted selector ring.  Three push-button switches then allow direct access to momentary, constant, or maximum output.  Normally powered by an included lithium-ion rechargeable battery, the UDR Dominator is “Dual Fuel” capable and allows the use of 123A lithium primary batteries as an alternative power source. Continue reading

FOURSEVENS is known for pushing the envelope and not being content with simply producing “more of the same” when it comes to flashlight design.  If the company’s history is any indication, it would seem that nothing has been off limits with regard to the materials, user interfaces, or the LED technology used in their lights.  Naturally I was looking forward to checking out their booth at the 2015 SHOT Show®, meeting David Chow, and learning about what’s coming next.

SureFire 2015 New Products

Like many companies, SureFire uses the annual SHOT Show® to showcase their diverse line of products to prospective buyers and users.  The bulk of their booth space is devoted to displaying their current offerings including illumination tools, tactical equipment, hearing protection, and training services.

However, it is the circular display counter at the center of the booth that arguably draws the most attention.  Arrayed with the newest products planned for the coming year, this is where visitors can lay their eyes and hands upon the next generation of SureFire flashlights.  Judging from the size of the crowd around this display, there was no shortage of people who were interested in seeing what SureFire has been up to.

Review: SureFire P1R Peacekeeper

The SureFire P1R Peacekeeper is a compact high-output flashlight designed to meet the needs of law enforcement personnel. Normally powered by the included lithium-ion battery the Peacekeeper is rated to provide a maximum of 600 lumens of output and is available in two versions.

  • P1R Peacekeeper Tactical (P1R-A-BK):  Single output version (600 lumens) equipped with a press for momentary, twist for constant-on tactical switch.
  • P1R Peacekeeper (P1R-B-BK):  Dual output version (600 lumens and 15 lumens) with a click-type switch.  Partially press for momentary-on high output or press further, until it clicks, for constant-on high output.  Low mode is activated by returning to off and pressing or clicking again within 2 seconds.  After being off for more than 2 seconds, the Peacekeeper will always return to high mode the next time it is turned on.

Both versions of the Peacekeeper have a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $250 and retail for around $200.

Review: FOURSEVENS Maelstrom Regen MMR-X

The FOURSEVENS Regen MMR-X is a high-output rechargeable flashlight capable of producing a maximum of 800 lumens in a short duration “Burst” mode and offers up to three lower output levels along with four special strobe/flashing modes.  The MMR-X is user programmable, allowing the choice of any one of five distinct output configurations, ranging from a single output mode to having all eight available. The extremely compact MMR-X is also the first FOURSEVENS product to provide micro-USB recharging capability for the included proprietary lithium-ion 18650 battery.

The MMR-X has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $100.  The sample used in this review was provided by FOURSEVENS.

Review: SureFire UNR Commander

The SureFire UNR Commander is a high-output rechargeable LED flashlight with four output levels – ranging from 30 to 800 lumens – and a high intensity strobe mode.  Powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the UNR Commander is “Dual-Fuel” capable and can operate at lower output levels with two 123A batteries in the included battery carrier.

A six position selector ring and unique 4-function tailcap switch are used to activate the various output modes with the full 800 lumen output always instantly available via SureFire’s MaxBlast feature.  The UNR Commander has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $655 with actual retail prices closer to $460.   Continue reading

SureFire R1 Lawman Review

Review: SureFire R1 Lawman

The SureFire R1 Lawman is a rechargeable high-powered LED flashlight designed for law enforcement use and features a maximum output of 750 lumens triggered by user programmable head and tailcap switches.  The R1 is capable of providing up to 5 different modes of operation including momentary high output; constant-on high, medium, and low outputs; and a high intensity strobe.

Normally powered by a proprietary lithium-ion battery, the R1 is “Dual-Fuel” capable and may also be powered by two primary or rechargeable 123A cells using the included battery carrier. When powered by 123A primary cells, maximum output is limited to 500 lumens and runtimes are reduced by approximately 25%.

MSRP for the R1 is $455 with actual retail pricing below $350.
